Manalox 730

Thickening Agent for Oil Systems

Manalox 730 is a highly reactive oxoaluminum acylate capable of thickening and gelling many types of aromatic and non-aromatic oils including white oils, kerosene, diesel fuel, fuel oils, and naphthenic oils. Manalox 730 reacts quickly to thicken and gel oil, even at room temperature.

Manalox 730 comes supplied as a 60% active aluminum acylate in an ester solvent and offers the following benefits.

  • Liquid – ease of handling

  • Highly reactive – provides rapid thickening

  • Excellent solubility - soluble in a variety of aliphatic, aromatic, and naphthenic hydrocarbons

  • Non-hazardous classification – the product is not considered flammable per shipping regulations

  • Consistency – the overall aluminum content is tightly controlled resulting in a more consistent product

Use Information

The degree of thickening is controlled by the amount of Manalox 730 added and the rate at which the oil thickens is temperature dependent. The level of Manalox 730 required varies depending on the type of oil used and the gel structure desired, but generally falls between 2.0% and 5.0% by volume relative to oil. Manalox 730 is highly recommended for customers who require short oil thickening and gelling times as well as for those in the oilfield chemicals business who are looking for alternatives to phosphorous based gellant systems.

Example Formulations

Example 1

Parts By Weight
Petroleum oil93.7
Manalox 7303.0
2-ethylhexanoic acid2.8
Water0.5

Dissolve the Manalox 730 in the petroleum oil followed by the 2-ethylhexanoic acid. Mix well and leave for one hour. Add water and mix thoroughly. Let stand to develop gel.

Example 2

  Parts By Weight
Petroleum oil92.3
Manalox 7303.2
2-ethylhexanoic acid1.5
Ricinoleic Acid3.0

Dissolve the Manalox 730 in the petroleum oil followed by the 2-ethylhexanoic acid and ricinoleic acid. Mix well and let stand to develop gel.

Handling and Storage of Manalox 730

Manalox 730 will react rapidly and irreversibly with atmospheric moisture to form partial hydrolysis products with consequent loss in expected chemical reactivity. Drum quantities should be stored in dry surroundings, away from the possibility of water collecting on the lids. Laboratory quantities should be kept tightly sealed to maintain reactivity.
